What the internet is talking about this month (September 2024)
Joker 2 sucks, a restaurant eats birthday cake from guests, and Liam Payne’s ongoing beef with the internet,…
Hey guys! Missed me?
I know I missed last week’s newsletter but I was working hard on this whole rebrand thing. I actually have a different recap for these weekly newsletters. I’m adding a few more sections to the newsletter and editing the way I do them. You’ll still get your weekly recaps, but every first Sunday of the month, I’ll link out all of the weeks from the month before so you can catch up that way. I felt like adding the entire recap + the new sections would be a bit much. That way, those who keep up weekly don’t have to read the same stuff every time. Let me know if you like this new format better than the last one.
Also, regarding the new sections, here’s a mini breakdown of what they will be moving forward:
What the internet is talking about this week: Your usual weekly recap.
What’s on the FYP: Trends that I have spotted this week.
Put it on the Calendar: Any important upcoming dates
This is sending me: Some content I think is hilarious and want to share with you guys
Things I do when I am not scrolling: Updates on what I am working on with Unserious and life things
If you love these weekly recaps, you might love our Substack, where there will be a lot more content. I’m going to be posting new and old tea over the next week or so that never made it prior because of imposter syndrome. If you’d like to brush up on your internet drama, make sure to subscribe and consider supporting Unserious by getting a paid subscription.
Alright, I am done talking. Let’s get into the newsletter.
PS. Follow is on Instagram for more content.)
What the internet is talking about this month
What the internet is talking about during this week: Joker 2 sucks, a restaurant eats birthday cake from guests, and Liam Payne’s ongoing beef with the internet,…
Get the recaps from the month of September:
Crumbl Cookies in Sydney
Two Australian boys flew to Hawaii to buy 1,000 cookies and later organized a pop-up to sell them at $17.50 each. Hundreds of people lined up for hours to buy stale cookies. I recently wrote an entire breakdown of the drama if you’d like to read it. I had a lot of fun writing that one.
Joker 2
What is it with musical movies not advertising themselves as musicals anymore? People are showing up to the movie theatre to see the movie just to walk out after the second song because people KEEP SINGING. @punishedben tweeted: “never seen it happen before but every musical set piece this film did, more and more people kept leaving the theater.” That would piss me off, to be honest. I hate musicals (except High School Musical and Bollywood movies ofcourse) I guess the box office numbers will be big but at what cost? My favourite thing is people quote tweeting their tweets being excited about the movie with their disappointment like @iamdavisss: Initially tweeting: “NOW WATCHING JOKER 2. I LOVED THE FIRST ONE IM SURE THIS ONE WILL BE JUST AS GOOD” which was followed with: “Goodness gracious man wtf”.
Renee returns her Hermes purse
For many of us, this might not be a problem within our tax bracket (if it is, please slide in my DMs 😊). @isishong posted a video in which she was angry that her mother-in-law had returned the Hermes purse she had gifted her. No context was provided except for the fact that she was angry and keeping the purse for herself.

Restaurant eats a guest’s cake
The internet was SEETHING with this one because @ryannordheimer had baked a big cake for is friend’s birthday party. He spent over 6 hours baking it. When he asked the restaurant if he could cut the cake himself, they said it would be a safety hazard and that he had to pay a cake-cutting fee. When they each got their slices, they got the thinest slices known to man. When they asked for the leftovers, the restaurant said there were no leftovers. Ryan assumed they had eaten the cake. The internet was furious because they felt like Ryan was a bit too understanding and told him he needed at least one mean friend in the group for situations like this. People demanded answers by flooding the restaurant’s comment section. The restaurant ended up reaching out to Ryan and offering him 2 free meals for two to make up for it.

Girl catfishes a man who flew out to visit her
This story is so crazy the way it’s developing I have no idea where this is going to be honest. A couple of days ago, @babycharlotte1 posted a video at the airport of her letting everyone know she had been catfishing this guy because she thought he was a catfish, but he actually showed up to meet her, and she didn’t know what to do. She had been pretending to be a different influencer called Sophie Rain. People told her to come clean and apologize to the guy. Sophie who saw the video and responded. She was upset about the whole thing and mad at Charlotte for doing all of this. In the meantime, Charlotte and the airport guy ended up talking and meeting. He was fine with the whole thing because she’s also attractive? Besides, he had a couple of things he needed to confess too. Apparently he is a wealthy man (I feel like I am writing a Wattpadd fan fiction right now). She ended up on his yacht.

Liam Payne will never beat the attention seeking allegations
Liam Payne has been beefing with the internet ever since his infamous interview where he claimed One Direction was built around him, which was quickly debunked by XFactor themselves. This week a video popped up of Liam at Niall Horan’s concert trying to get attention from his fans. People were quick to call him out. @piinksrry posted the video on Twitter with the caption: “this is actually the corniest thing ive ever seen” and Niall Horan, his former band mate, liked it. The most embarrassing part is that Naill has told Liam to stop mentioning him in interviews, which Liam himself has shared in interviews. Liam just won’t stop and then pulls this at his concert. Attention seeking much?
Glamour Women of The Year: Mom’s
The entire internet is talking about this cover for two reasons: 1. They feel like Travis Kelce’s mom shouldn’t have been there. Not because she didn’t raise famous athletes in her own right, but because all the other women had more similarities in issues in raising women or women of colour while Travis’ mom didn’t. 2. They felt like Kris Jenner should’ve been on the cover or even Taylor Swift’s mom. @MyleezaKardash wrote: “No Kris Jenner is crazy.” But honestly, I think Kris deserves her own cover. I said what I said. Don’t jump me. But building multiple billion-dollar empires around ALL of her daughters. That’s just a different league, in my opinion.
Lady’s finds out her house is haunted which leads to a buried rug in her backyard being discovered
Sorry guys I am not going to do a deep dive on this because I am actually going to write an entire deep dive on next week on Substack. If you want to watch the storytime by Katie herself before I do feel free to do so. If not you can wait for my deep dive.

The Queen of Genovia is BACK!
Anne Hathaway has shook the internet once again with this announcement of Princess Diaries 3. I am not sure who the social media manager is behind the accounts but miss ma’am you ate with this idea. I can’t wait to see how this movie turns out.
What’s on the FYP?
Here are some trends I have been seeing on my timeline across socials:
Bald whale: I’ve seen it 10 times on my LinkedIn timeline in the span of 10 minutes🧍🏾♀️
People are thanking Beyoncé: This is people making fun of conspiracy theories that accuse Beyoncé of being responsible for a bunch of random stuff.
I also covered September trends in this post. Some of which are still trending right now.

People went to the Billie Eilish concert and started singing the cat version of her song What Was I Made For. If you’re confused about why this is hilarious, there’s a whole side of TikTok that makes sad AI videos with cats as the main character and every video features this song as a cover but instead of singing the words they say “meow meow meow”. There was a whole trend of parents showing the videos to their toddlers who would start crying. @thebillieglobe a Billie Eilish fan account took a video of Billie laughing with the caption “Me when watching all the kid’s cry under this sound:” and Billie reposted. Now month later they are singing the cat version at her concert. Those are just the types of jokes you only understand when you’re chronically online.
